The Scottish Wide Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Scheme aims to ensure that mothers are able to breastfeed their babies in comfort and without interruption.
As part of the scheme, participating businesses and public places (like cafes or health centres) display a window sticker to let mothers know that they are welcome to breastfeed there. Bigger businesses often have a dedicated feeding room which might suit you. If you prefer to get comfy and feed baby whilst enjoying your own lunch or activity, all premises in the scheme are friendly and welcoming and more than happy to make you as comfortable as possible whilst you are feeding your baby.
Remember no one can discrimate against you for feeding your baby but some mothers really appreciate the reassurance of knowing staff in the venue have been trained to support them.

Breastfeeding Out and About
We wanted to show you a clip that talks about breastfeeding whilst out and about. Did you know it is an offence if anyone tries to stop you feeding a child milk under the age 2 in a public place or licensed property? The Breastfeeding etc (Scotland) Act 2010 refers to ‘milk’ as breast milk, cow’s milk or infant formula.
Inevitably, some mums might feel a wee bit (or very!) self conscious about feeding in public. Breastfeeding in public in the UK tends to be done very discreetly by mums – practice makes perfect and your confidence will grow too. Ask your partner or try breastfeeding in front of a mirror if you are showing anything you would rather not, and readjust your position or clothing to suit if that matters to you.
Some mums love the peace and quiet of nursing rooms (especially ones with great glider chairs!), some mums want to use a breastfeeding cover or scarf but you can feed your baby anywhere! There are a lot of breastfeeding clothes on the market but you may find layering your tops works really well. The other great thing about breastfeeding away from home, is that you don’t need to take anything with you and you are ready to feed at any time!
