Care during Pregnancy

Your first midwife appointment: What to expect

Your first appointment with a midwife is often known as your ‘booking appointment’. You can find out more information on what you will be asked at this appointment and some of the tests you will be offered by clicking here.

Care during your pregnancy

You will receive care throughout your pregnancy from a team of midwives. If you have any existing health condition, you may also receive care from other health professionals besides your midwife, depending on your health care needs and choices. Your midwife will discuss the choices that are available for your care during pregnancy.

Routine Urine Checks in Pregnancy

You will be asked to give a sample of your urine (wee) at each antenatal appointment to check for protein, which can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. You may also be asked to give a urine sample if you have any symptoms of having a urinary tract infection at any time during your pregnancy.

It is important to give a sample that is ‘midstream’ – this means it is taken halfway through weeing. This is the best way to tell if there is an infection in your bladder.

– Pass a small amount of urine into toilet, then stop.
– Pass more urine into container, then stop.
– Pass remainder of urine into toilet. This is called a ‘midstream’ specimen.
– Wash your hands.

Remember during pregnancy it is very important to have your urine checked at every clinic visit. This helps to detect serious pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia and diabetes.
