Eating and Drinking

What you Eat

Did you know breastmilk is made from your blood, not what is in your stomach or your digestive tract. We often get asked if there is anything that breastfeeding mums shouldn’t eat , the answer is basically no!

Unlike in pregnancy where there are certain foods you are advised to avoid, when your baby is born, you revert back to your usual diet.

If things are going well and then all of a sudden baby starts to get upset or windy, it’s a good idea to have a think about what has been different, maybe your baby needs to change their positioning or attach more deeply to the breast.

Lots of mums are pretty pragmatic about enjoying the foods they like and not worrying too much if baby seems not to appreciate it the next day. Here’s a useful link for further information: https://www.laleche.org.uk/breastfeeding-and-a-mothers-diet-myths-and-facts/

I’ve been told I need to drink lots of water to maintain a milk supply. How much water do I need to drink?

It is important for your own health to drink to to your thirst level and ensure your urine is pale coloured. This will keep you well hydrated and provide enough liquid. Lots of mothers say having a water bottle near by and having a drink when they are breastfeeding helps them keep their fluid levels up and that they often find themselves thirsty when breastfeeding.
