How long do I breastfeed for?

The World Health Organisation recommends that babies are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. This means feeding breast milk only.

After this, it is recommended to continue to breastfeed for 2 years and beyond, alongside complementary solids (sometimes called weaning).

Every breastfeed that is offered provides health benefits and protection to you and your baby. There is no need to decide at the start how long you plan to breastfeed for, you can take it one feed at a time and continue for as long as it feels right for you and your baby.

If you aren’t sure if you want to continue breastfeeding, chat with your midwife or health visitor / family nurse who can provide information and support and support you to stop safely. Alternatively, contact the National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 100 0212.
