If your baby arrives early or needs a little help

If your baby is in the Neonatal Unit you will be encouraged to breastfeed or express because early or sick babies are more at risk from infections so breastmilk protects their health. You will get lots of support from the staff there, who have so much experience in helping mums in the early days.

You’ll be supported to:

❤️ Hand express as soon as possible after birth. We have “Liquid Gold” expression kits available in theatre for you (ideally within the first two hours if you are well enough)

❤️ Express at least 8 times in 24 hours (including at night)

❤️ Hand express initially then combine hand and pump

❤️ Leave no more than 6 hours between expressions

❤️ Make frequent visits to your baby adopting kangaroo care where possible, so your baby is in constant skin to skin contact.

Our Neonatal Unit practise Family Integrated Care and you will be fully involved in your baby’s care.

They have dedicated, experienced Infant Feeding Advisors who will help you to establish your lactation, breastmilk feeding and breastfeeding.
