Physical Changes after birth

The first few days after your baby is born can be tough because you’re likely to be tired, sore and uncomfortable. It can take a while for your body to recover and for you to adjust to everything that’s changed. Please try and take it easy and don’t push yourself too hard.

Some top tips on recovering after having a baby

  • Wash your hands before and after going to the toilet to reduce the risk of infection
  • Take regular pain killers – setting an alarm might help you remember to take these
  • Take regular naps where possible.  Try to sleep when your baby sleeps
  • Eat well and keep well hydrated
  • Change your sanitary pads regularly
  • Take a shower or a short bath each day
  • Accept any help and support offered to you
  • Do not wear tight fitting nursing bra or tops
  • Don’t make plans for the first week and don’t ‘entertain’ visitors. Encourage visitors who want to visit to help with chores, feed you or give you a chance to grab a nap
  • Don’t worry about housework or chores
