Transfer during labour or shortly after

Transfers to an Obstetric Unit

There may be occasions when your midwife recommends you transfer to the obstetric unit in Aberdeen Maternity Hospital during your labour or shortly after the birth of your baby. Transfer into hospital during labour or following birth is an important consideration when planning where to give birth.

When people think about ‘transfer’, they often think this will be an emergency, but in practice, most transfers are for non-emergency reasons, if an emergency transfer is required in labour, the midwife will request a 999 ambulance. Midwife led units and midwives providing home birth services work closely with hospitals and ambulance services to provide safe, timely and coordinated care during transfers.
