If breastfeeding is sore

If Breastfeeding is Sore

There really is no best way of doing it, so long as you are comfortable, well supported and your baby is able to feed effectively.

It’s also a good idea to have a think about what else you might need whilst breastfeeding – snacks, phone, book, remote control, water so you know that when you’re nice and comfortable feeding, you’ll have everything you need close to hand.

It’s completely normal to feel a wee bit of discomfort in the early days at the start of the feed, but it’s NOT normal to sit through an entire feed with discomfort or pain. If you are experiencing prolonged discomfort, pop your little finger in the corner of baby’s mouth until you can feel the suction has been broken and remove them from the breast. Then go through your positioning and attachment again.

If the pain is still present throughout or at the end of a feed, this should be explored. Please remember that your Midwife will help you until you feel confident, and you can ask for help as many times as you need. Your Breastfeeding Peer Supporter can also support you with positioning and attaching your baby. To find out more information on Breastfeeding Peer Supporters please click here.
