Inverurie Community Maternity Unit

Inverurie CMU has a friendly, relaxing and welcoming environment. The unit is run by a team of midwives, maternity care assistants and health care support workers who provide care and support to women throughout pregnancy and in the early days following the birth of your baby.

What facilities does the unit have?

  • There are two birthing suites.
  • All the rooms have an en-suite shower and toilet.
  • There are also four single rooms with en-suite facilities.
  • There is a small courtyard where you can sit and enjoy the outside space.
  • There are Bluetooth speakers available to enable you to enjoy your own choice of relaxing music.
  • You will have access to equipment such as birthing balls and birthing mats should you wish to use these. If you’d prefer to bring your own birthing ball, you are welcome to do so.
  • There is a range of pain relief options available to you. Including; the birthing pool, gas and air and morphine injection.
  • There is a neonatal resuscitaire should your baby require assistance at birth. This allows you as parents to remain near your baby and keep you included in their ongoing care.
  • The unit does not have on site medical, neonatal or anaesthetic specialists. If you or your baby required additional care from these specialists or any complications were to arise during or shortly after the birth of your baby, your midwife would recommend that you transfer to the Labour Ward at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital for ongoing care.  Transfer to this level of care by ambulance can take approximately 25 minutes. You can find out more information on transfers in labour by clicking here.

15/02/2021 A spokesperson for NHS Grampian said:

“During maintenance, an installation problem was found with the birthing pools at the community midwifery unit, at the Inverurie Health and Social Care Hub. To date we have been unable to rectify this and as a result the pools continue to be out of use and will need to be replaced.

Having discovered this, it is vital it is rectified to ensure it does not create problems in future.

We apologise to anyone whose birthing plan is affected by this. We aim to have new pools installed and in use as soon as possible, but at this point have no confirmed date for completion of the procurement and installation works.

Mums-to-be can still use the facility for labour and birth and will be offered the use of the birthing pool facilities elsewhere in Grampian to allow them to utilise the birthing pool in labour if this is their preferred choice.’

After your baby is born

Inverurie CMU has four single postnatal rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, if you need to remain in the unit for further monitoring or support.

If all is well with you and your baby, no further checks or monitoring is required and the time is right and appropriate for you and your baby, you can go home directly from the birthing suite.  This can be soon after the birth, should you wish. This will allow you time to get to know your baby and to enjoy that precious initial new family time in the comfort of your own home.
