Peterhead Community Maternity Unit

The moonlight birthing suite

Peterhead CMU has recently been refurbished and has a lovely, relaxing and welcoming environment. The unit is run by a team of midwives, midwifery care assistants and health care support workers who provide care and support to women throughout pregnancy and in the days following the birth of your baby.

What facilities does the unit have?

  • There are two birthing suites. The Moonlight Suite in shades of blue and the Sunrise Suite in shades of orange.
  • Both suites have birthing pools with ambient colour adjustable lighting.
  • There are bluetooth speakers available to enable you to enjoy your own choice of relaxing music.
  • Both birthing suites have en-suite facilities.
  • You will have access to equipment such as birthing balls and birthing mats should you wish to use these. You may also bring your own birthing ball if you have one.
  • The beds are able to move into a variety of positions to support you being active during your labour.
  • There is a range of pain relief options available to you. Including; the birthing pool, gas and air and morphine injection.
  • Both birthing suites accommodate a neonatal resuscitaire should your baby require assistance at birth. This allows you as parents to remain near your baby and keep you included in their ongoing care.
  • The unit does not have on site medical, neonatal or anaesthetic specialists. If you or your baby required additional care from these specialists or any complications were to arise during or shortly after the birth of your baby, your midwife would recommend that you transfer to the Labour Ward at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital for ongoing care.  Transfer to this level of care by ambulance can take approximately 45 minutes. You can find out more information on transfers in labour by clicking here.

After your baby is born

If all is well with you and your baby and no further checks or monitoring is required you can go home directly from the birthing suite to the comfort of your own home when the time is right and appropriate for you and your baby. This can be soon after the birth, should you wish.  This will allow you time to get to know your baby and to enjoy that precious initial new family time.

Peterhead CMU has a three bedded postnatal room with shared bathroom facilities if you need to remain in for further monitoring or support for you or your baby.
